It was a very special race day for Alvis. First, it was his 9 year old birthday on the race weekend and second, his 'Gong Gong' and 'Ah Ma' came to France to see him race.

This is also the first time we engaged CSKart47 race assistance to manage Alvis for the weekend. Due to my limited knowledge in the 2 stoke kart engine and carburetor setup and tuning, we thought it will be better to try it out with the professional.

The timing said it all. This is Alvis first pole position in the new category, 9 to 12 year old (birthday in the year). After his entry in Feb, he has been training hard on the track. I guessed he has progressed and I was moving too slowly as his mechanic.

Just look at his size amongst his category, that, however did not stop him from wanting to race with them. In fact, he is looking forward to race with the bigger boys. When comes to racing, he is all ready to race with anyone regardless of age and size.

It was a very good experience for Alvis as he has learned how to take the lead during the formation lap.

What Alvis lack during the race was luck. He was 'touched' on the back on the first corner and was skidded out of the track. Though able to restart engine and continue the race but were many seconds behind. It was a rain and shine situation throughout the race and we know it wasn't easy on the kart setup as well as for Alvis. Nevertheless, We were happy for the weekend.

Also not forgetting 'Gong Gong', 'Ah Ma', Peter Chong and wife for coming to support Alvis on his race. The 2nd Race took place at Muret, Toulouse. A more technical and tougher track with many corners and two short straights.

As usual, striking a pose before going out to the track for practice and not forgetting to give a thumb up sign.

Again, new to the track and Alvis has to grab every opportunity to discover the best racing line possible. Though following the local racers will help but the little racer will still love to explore out of the local racing line. I guess this is where Alvis learns and get the ability to adapt to different circuits fast.

Alvis made good progress during the practice session. This time round, Antoine was not with us and I was trying my luck with the setting up of the kart with some helps from other mechanics onsite.

Being the youngest in his category, Alvis surprised many during the chrono laps clocking the 4th fastest although with limited times on the track. 2nd row on the grid during the qualification and maintained his position till the checkered flag before we break for lunch.

History kind of repeated itself from the first race. Things wasn't going the way as the morning as the afternoon is getting hotter. During the pre-final, Alvis was going steadily during the formation lap and keeping close to the front row. When the red lights off to sign a start of the race, Alvis pressed on the throttle but only to experience a slow in respond from the engine. Dropping from 4th to 11th after the first corner and gained back 2 places to finish 9th. Was feeling uneasy while trying to meddle with the carburettor before the final and told Alvis to complete the race no matter what happen to the kart. True enough, the kart lost power and Alvis fighting hard to maintain his position but only to see that his position was dropping and was the last to cross the finishing line.

Nevertheless, it was an exciting race for us both as a racer and a mechanic. There are plenty for us to learn, try and put to use on the right moment. Alvis made a few more friends and was welcomed by the the locals to practice together with them. We thank them for the invitations and will certainly find time to meet up though it is more than 3 hours drive away.

Taking Up The New Challenge

Back in France for a new challenge. After returning from Singapore, Alvis started his training on the next category Minime kart (9 to 12 year old). Powered by Parilla Puma 85cc 2 stroke engine with 14000rpm and having a whopping 13hp.

While still trying to build up his physical strength and at the same time trying to get more track time, Alvis decided to go for his first race at Layrac to have a feel of the new race environment.

To add on to the challenge, the race was held on a new and unfamiliar track. He will be racing against the bigger boys that have more experience racing there. Being the youngest and least experience in the group, that doesn't put Alvis off as he is the type that will take any challenge when come to racing.

Due to my inexperience in managing kart racing and especially 2 stroke engine where more setup and tuning were needed, we decided to engage the service of Kart Center Biscarrosse to manage Alvis's first race.

It wasn't a good timing for Alvis during the chrono session. With lack of practice and while still trying to find the right setup, Alvis tried his best to keep up to the front runners but only to settle with 8th position on the grid.

During the qualification, Alvis had a great start. Seeing that there was a bit of traffic on the inner of a right turn, he took the outer and gain 2 places to 6th. Getting hold of the feel around the track, he was able to overtake one more and up to 5th. The 3rd kart skidded and was unable to return to track and soon, the fight for 3rd was visible during the last 3 laps. It was a close fight but Alvis was happy to finish 4th.

Things wasn't as smooth going during the pre-final and final as the qualification. Alvis dropped 3 places to 7th on the pre-final and one more to 8th during the final. It was a very good experience for Alvis to race with the bigger boys and me to learn a lot on the setup and tuning of the 2 stroke engine and chassis.

We would like to thank Kart Center Biscarrosse and Antoine for the support, FFSA and Layrac karting for organizing the race and all who one way or another that rendered their help to us. Lastly, not forgetting Peter Chong and wife for making a great effort to go all the way to Layrac to support and see Alvis in his kart racing.

A Day Testing with CRG Junior Team Asia

During the one month holidays in Singapore, Alvis was lucky and honoured to have a day testing with CRG Malaysia, the official CRG Junior Team Asia at Speedway Plus Elite .

The team has to really work on the pedal because Alvis was way too short for the cadet chassis. It was lucky that we brought along his custom made pedal extension.

Alvis was happy to hear that Cheryl was all ready to race with him. He actually told me that he felt a bit bored going round and round alone and wanted to race with Cheryl.

All set to go. Nik was giving Alvis some coaching in the background while Cheryl was having a snap shot before the race start.

They were having fun racing and overtaking each other on the straight and corners. Although it was just a testing but the little racer always like it to be a race.

Though it was the first time on the track, Alvis was getting quite a good timing and Nik continues to give him guidance as to where he can bring the timing down bit by bit.

Alvis was excited about his visit to a race car garage. An arrangement was made with Mr Lawrence Lee, Managing Director of HKS Technical Factory Singapore for Alvis to visit Garage R during his holidays to see how a race car is being created.

Lawrence took his precious time off his busy schedule to bring Alvis for a tour around the garage. He brought him to the engine build room to show him how a engine was built and assembled.

After the tour, Alvis requested for a joy ride in the GTR but was not lucky enough because the GTR was undergoing upgrading. It was very nice of Lawrence to replace it with a Honda S2000 and bring Alvis for a joy ride.

It was the first time for us to visit a race car garage. Definitely an eye opener for us, especially Alvis. We would like to thank Lawrence for the invitation and his time for accompanying us and show us around the garage. We wish him and Garage R with all the success in his business and races.

2011 F1 Winter Testing and guided tour

This is the second time that Alvis visited Circuit De Catalunya. Last year, we did not manage to book the guided tour. This year, we did.

The forever Felipe Massa supporter. The first F1 driver that gave Alvis four signatures. If you have read the previous post, you will know that it was kind of fated that how Alvis got to meet up with Felipe Massa.

This day, we arrived early at Circuit De Catalunya to collect our guided tour entry passes. Alvis was so happy and excited because he waited for a year for the guided tour. He always wanted to see and be at the place where the F1 drivers would be.

While waiting for the others to collect their passes, Alvis took a photo with the Official Ferrari store. The Ferrari fan that started wearing Ferrari products because of Felipe Massa. He has given Alvis the special liking for the prancing horse.

Alvis hopes the next time he lifts a trophy again in Circuit De Catalunya, it will be after a race with National Anthem.

A Wet Race With Lao Tioh At Plentong

A day trip to Johor Bahru Plentong karting track on a rainy day. It was a near cancelled trip due to the rain but somehow we pressed on as to probably not to disappoint Alvis.

All gear up and ready to rock and roll.

Alvis started off with a small kart and it was like a guided tour round the wet track as a familiarize session and probably to ensure the quickest assistant if he was to skid out of the track.

Thinking that might be a good arrangement for him on a new track but it actually dampened his spirit. He did not like the idea because his main objective was to race with uncle Peter(Lao Tioh).

Finally, after some discussion and arrangement, he was able to hop onto a faster kart which was used early by one of the staff. He was happy and all ready to race again.

The race is on and they were having lots of fun racing in the rain.

The excitement from watching them racing against each other actually warm up the surrounding on a cold rainy day.

It was a fun and exciting first hand and first time experience for Alvis' Gong Gong, Ah Ma, Gu Gu, Lao Tioh, Lao Yee and even Kayden to see him racing on a kart. We would like to thank them for taking the time to bring Alvis for karting and not forgetting the yummy seafood dinner.

Go Karting with Jason Ah Gu at Kartright Speedway

It was a long waited karting session with Jason Ah Gu since knowing that Alvis is into kart racing.

What a good way to start by walking the track to take a closer look and better understanding of the track.

First time with a Tony kart and getting ready while waiting for the kart to be setup.

Ricky was giving Alvis some instructions before he zoom away. I wonder was he listening or he was waiting for the instructions to end so that he can pedal on.

Jason and Alvis were having lots of fun racing against one another, overtaking and exchanging position on a wet track.

Fun, fun, fun. Thank you Jason Ah Gu and Alvis will race with you again when we go back for holidays again.

Little Alvis is home for CNY!

Remember I wrote about a Singaporean boy who is based in France and winning the karting races in his hometown?
Yes, Alvis is back home for CNY and I met up with him at Kartright two days ago. I’ve not met him in his racing gear and he really looks so so cute in them!

I forgot to tell his mum Esther that the minimum height requirement at Kartright for the rental karts is 1.4m! Oops, Alvis is only 1.2m+. Erp..

They just bought a brand new Arai helmet from William so he kindly drew out one of his customers’ karts for Alvis to test. It belongs to a girl and I think it hasn’t been used for some time (the mechanic was revving the engine for a while before it started properly).

The kart got up and running and Alvis was raring to go! Esther was telling me how he hasn’t karted in a month, hence he’s been itching to kart!

I wasn’t dressed appropriately that day hence I couldn’t kart with him (I would be beaten FLAT by him anyway, so save me the humiliation!). He’s here until mid-Feb so we’ll arrange to go karting again at Kartright or maybe at Sepang even!

I’m meeting them again tonight for dinner! Can’t wait to see him again.. Now let me go find Ferrari goodies for this prancing horse fan!

Going back to Singapore for Holidays

Alvis will be going to back to Singapore for 4 weeks (15th Jan to 13 Feb) holidays and to celebrate Chinese New Year. During his stays, he will travel to Malaysia karting circuit to gain some experience of the local tracks. Hopefully, he will get a chance to kart in Singapore too.

FFSA Ecole Française de Karting (EFK) De Kart Center Biscarrosse

So far, Alvis learns most of his driving skill from playing racing simulator games. Knowing that is insufficient for his learning path, he was enrolled to learn go karting at Ecole Française de Karting (EFK) De Kart Center Biscarrosse under the teaching of David CRUZ.

Beside learning karting skills at the school, you will learn to respect the karting values and rules which apply on and off the racetrack. The principles of these teachings are based on values such as respect for self and others and sporting behaviors. Respect the signs and the flags on the track. Respect the officials and rules of the sporting code on and off the circuit.

The course consists of 3 stages and will be taught over 24 weeks.
The first stages, Bronze Wheel:

Learning and knowing the different characteristics of the kart. Know and respect the specification of the flags. Control the kart without hitting and go between slalom cones. Know and apply the safety maneuvers, staying in the kart when off the track and raise your hands to get attention to prevent accident. Knowledge to stop in the shortest possible distance without locking the rear wheels. Know to avoid an obstacle (short reaction, decision-making with emergency response). Learn to coordinate the management of the accelerator and brake. Be able to make 3 timed laps, resulting in 110% of the time of referral.

Second stage, Silver Wheel:

Knowledge of the Bronze Wheel. Ability to manage a safe distance with other drivers and respect those imposed by the instructor. Knowing his position on the track and learn to look away and turn around without deflecting the trajectory of the kart. Know how to drive the entire circuit without leaving the track. Know how to prepare your kart. Be able to make 3 timed laps, resulting in 105% of the time of referral.

Third stage, Gold Wheel:

Knowledge of the Silver Wheel. Knowing how to adopt an ideal path without materialisation. Know how to overtake or being overtaken without touching his opponent. Learn the process and know how to take a departure. Be able to make 3 timed laps, resulting in the 101 % of the time of reference. The time of reference is the best time, achieved on the track for the category.

I was watching my little cousin play his latest Formula 1 2010 video game the other day and it amazed me how he could go on at it for hours.
He could concentrate on his racing simulation game for the entire afternoon (and sometimes for the evening too), yet he has no real interest in the actual sport itself. When I asked him why, he simply said, “Because I’m not the one racing.”
Another eight-year-old that I got to know recently sings quite a different tune to the same song. Currently based in France, Singaporean Alvis Ang was hooked onto racing at an age of barely four years old after being introduced to his first racing simulation game.
The influence of video games extends far beyond what anyone can imagine. It all started when Uncle Peter and Auntie Angie took him to Toys ‘R’ Us and bought him the HotWheels Stunt Track Challenge video game.

“After playing my racing games on the computer and on my Playstation 3 for three years, I was curious to know how it would feel like to drive for real. Finally when I was six and a half years old, my parents brought me to a karting track in Biganos where I tried a rental kart,” said Alvis who moved over to France with his parents four years ago.
Embracing his first karting experience, Alvis continued to visit the karting track on weekends. His interest grew so strongly that his parents decided to buy him a Subaru mini kart last April.
Six weeks after he received his first kart, Alvis participated in his first race at Magescq, South-West of France. The track was new to him but the unfamiliarity proved to be no barrier when Alvis finished on the podium in third place.
“I was very happy to get a trophy at my first race,” Alvis beamed. “I even clocked the fastest timing!”
His enthusiasm for karting is not unfounded, as Alvis has to “earn points” by completing certain tasks around the house before he is allowed to go karting.
The display of discipline and obedience for his passion at such a young age shows how karting is more than just a hobby.
“It’s a four-day school week here in France where the academic structure is less stressful compared to Singapore. Alvis’ passion for racing serves as a motivation for him to do well in school so he can spend more time karting or doing other activities like swimming, skateboarding, inline skating or reading,” said Esther Tan, Alvis’ mother.
Over the last 18 months, Alvis has proven to be competitive in his class. In his first year of racing, he completed every race on the podium and never finished lower than fourth place.
He came in overall runner-up for the Trophee Kart Sud-Ouest and Mini Kid championships in 2009, but returned this year to win both titles.

In addition to both titles, he also won five out of 10 races across the Southwest of France and was overall second for the Trophee Vincent Lener championship.
“Both of us are not avid motorsports enthusiasts and Alvis’ progress in kart racing has exceeded our basic knowledge of the sport. As long as he wants it, we will support him as far as we can. That was what we told ourselves from the moment we acknowledged and endorsed his passion,” said Tan who follows Alvis to all of his races.
As his parents have limited knowledge of karting, Alvis has to depend on himself to learn driving techniques – of which he largely picks up from the racing simulation games that he practises on so often.
“At the moment we are fully funding his racing foray. We don’t know how far he can go, but we are willing to try. The next step forward would probably be to move on to the national level of karting in Europe,” said Kesmond Ang, Alvis’ father, who works for ST Aerospace Engineering in France.
Like every other sport, karting has its risks. As parents, it is only natural to be worried when their child is driving at high speeds at such a young age.
“No doubt racing is dangerous, but we ensure that we take all the necessary safety precautions and we trust in his ability to handle situations during the race. In addition, kart racing has built up Alvis’ self-confidence and physical toughness, greatly enhanced his thought process and decision making skills as well as developed quick mental and muscle reflexes,” Ang added.
A huge fan of Ferrari drivers Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso, Alvis never leaves home without his collection of F1 caps, including the one personally autographed by Massa.
“I met Massa during the 2010 pre-season testing in Barcelona, where I got him to sign autographs for me three times. I love racing and I wish I can go karting everyday!” beamed a happy Alvis, revealing his missing front teeth in his smile.

Meeting Alvis: French-flavoured but Singaporean-made

You know how there are Singaporeans all over the world and sometimes just by Fate, you get acquainted with some of them who are halfway across the globe?

Alvis Ang is an eight-year-old born in Singapore but currently based in France. The little 1.2-ish metre-tall boy just had his two front teeth fall out, but he has already made quite a name for himself in the karting world in a Southern-West part of France.

He has quite a few race titles under his belt and despite his young age, his driving is completely self-taught, with a lot of practice on his racing simulator. Both his parents are not huge motorsports fans, neither do they kart; hence Alvis might just have a lot more potential to be untapped.

Europe is a much better place than Asia to be for motorsports and Alvis is lucky to be out here in France!

Anyway, here are some pictures of Alvis and me in their Renault Grand Espace that only has three seats because the rest were flattened to make space for transporting the little Ferrari fan and his kart around.

I gave Alvis a souvenir: the latest F1 Racing UK magazine that has a Ferrari cover coincidentally! I bought it at Changi Airport before i flew out to France, but i haven’t had a chance to look at it yet. No worries, i think Alvis deserves it more than me for being such an enthusiast!

Seriously, he is already displaying discipline and focus in his life so that he can go karting. Now that is passion and a good sign that he can go further than just hobby karting.

Alvis started reading the magazine immediately and btw, did i tell you he asked Felipe Massa for his autograph three times? One on a cap, one on his suit and one more.. erm.. oops :X i forgot where! :p

See that? It’s Massa’s signature! Yep, i read in an interview somewhere before that Massa will try to sign every single autograph he’s asked for, because when he was a boy he was rejected by Ayrton Senna (was it him or someone else?) and he could remember every ounce of disappointment he felt.

Hence, now that he’s a driver he will try his best to sign for everyone who asks him to. Aawww.

Alvis will be returning to Singapore for CNY next year, maybe i can take him karting then! And i was so happy when i heard him say “No LAH!”

Uniquely Singaporean, that’s my boy!

Le Mans - Circuit Alain Prost

After winning the 2010 Trophée Kart Ufolep Sud-Ouest Championship, Alvis went to Circuit Alain Prost, Le Mans for some fun.

After the first session, the sky turned dark and it rained for about 10 minutes. Just before the second session, there were two rainbows appeared beautifully over the track.

What a nice timing to have for just two sessions, one dry and one wet. Alvis was having fun on the wet track. Though it is a new track to him but he handled well with the rented kart.

The staffs were friendly and kind to let him go a few extra rounds before closing for the day. One of the staff asked him whether he will come back again and Alvis replied, 'peut-être' which mean maybe. We had fun and would certainly like to return one day for Alvis to race at the international circuit.

Vainqueur Trophée Kart Sud-Ouest 2010

This was the final round of the 7 race Trophée Kart Sud-Ouest 2010 Championship. The day started gloomy and slight drizzle in the morning with forecast of rain in the afternoon. The wet morning practice, chronos and heat 1 went on surprising smooth and without much excitement.

Alvis wasn't having the best of luck because during the pre-final, he was 'kissed' hard by someone who skidded and making a u turn when Alvis just passed him. The impact caused the right wheel track rod to break and his kart was immobilised. He retired prematurely even before completing the first lap. This boy took it gracefully though there were some angry and sad moments while waiting for the pre-final to end. I guessed every racer will experience this somewhere in their racing days. It would not be a race if everyone were driving in an orderly manner.

What a ride to have on a race day. Thank you to the tow team and the kids that help to bring Alvis and his kart back safely.

Starting the final from the last row was a bad place to be. Imaging you have only 4 laps to overtake as many as possible. Moving from last row to 6th position in just 4 laps on a wet day was an achievement for the little Champion. The final round of Trophée Kart Sud-Ouest 2010 ended on a rainy Sunday.

Racing near l'océan Atlantique

After a long summer break, Alvis returned to Montalivet karting track for the 6th race of Trophée Sud-ouest 2010. It was about 5 minutes drive away from the beach. It was almost windy throughout the whole day at the track.

It was a very important race for the Trophée Sud-ouest 2010 as Alvis needed to finish strongly to secure at least a podium for the Championship.

During the practice, he was struggling with the grip because this is the shortest track of the championship with a lot of twists and turns. Though he was getting quite a good timing but you can see that he was pushing hard to save that hundreds of a second each lap.

Alvis managed to finish second on chronos on the race day.

As the race went on, he was dropped from 2nd during the qualification to 3rd and to 4th on the final. At one point, he skidded out of the track after a 'kiss' with another kart during the final. Lucky enough for him to recover to join the group in 7th position. He put on a fight for the remaining laps to climb back to finish strong enough for a 4th.

We would like to thank the staff of Montalivet karting and the race officials for a wonderful race day. Also, not forgetting the nice restaurant recommended and we had a wonderful dinner by the Alantique Ocean.

National Race 2010 - St Benoit

To start with, we would like to thank St Benoit and the officials for making this race possible. It was a very 'exciting' race for us.

Weeks before the National race, I was very very busy preparing Alvis's kart because he seems not as competitive as before. Trying with many different set up but only to see very little improvement. Eventually, I decided to buy him a new engine. After fitting the new engine and full of confidence, he went for some run in laps before pushing it hard. OMG, it was worse! The timing gone almost one second slower than the old engine! To confirm, I fitted back the old engine and it became obvious what was wrong.

It was kind for uncle Choo Teck to willingly let Alvis test his kart with Choo Rui's kart and engine. It was clear again that it was half a second faster than his old engine. After a lot of kart swapping and engine changing, I sent the new engine back to the workshop. We decided to give the new engine another try after a further 'run in' by the workshop. Good, It was a better result with about 7/10 of a second faster than initially but still not the best. Without any other options and lack of time, we set off to St Benoit.

During the practice, it seems that the engine was working alright and we kept our fingers crossed hoping that it can be better during the race. There were some heart stopping and fast beating moment just before the last lap of the practice session ended. As usual, Alvis went into a blind spot corner (from our view) but he never came out from it this time. A few seconds later, We saw some officials running towards the 'blind spot corner' and that was the moment my heart was beating increasingly faster and faster. Thinking that it must be Alvis, I rushed to the scene. This time, my heart beat stop for a moment when I saw four medical staffs surrounded him. Only to start beating when one of the official asked if he is my son and I said yes. I was told that he went so close to the tire barriers that his kart tire 'kissed' it and went merry go round and round and round and round. The impact went so bad that the steering column and track rod bent badly. Blessed and thankful that he was alright except for some neck and back ache with a few knocks on his hands and legs and yes...he was alright. Why? Because my little racer told me that it gave him more confidence to go nearer to the tire barriers. See the passion in him?

Finally, the race day. Still filled with what happened yesterday, I tried to start the day as if nothing happened. Then suddenly, I noticed Alvis was not looking good.

He told me that he felt some pain in his neck and I guess any parents will say and do the same thing, that was to tell him to give up the race for the sake of his safety. He insisted that he was good to race but just that he was feeling somehow uncomfortable. After seeing how persistent he was and guess what? Yes, you were right, I said okay. I probably made the most risky decision in my life. Anyway, I told myself that from the first day I endorsed his passion for racing, I will try my best to support him as far as I can.

Really, really thankful for everything and it went all well for the race and it was a podium finished for Alvis. The best gift for us was that he finished the race strongly and safely and is still a happy racer.

Racing is not only about winning physically but mentally too

Be the first to cross the finishing line, win the race and get on top of the podium definitely is something that every racer would love to achieve. There is one thing that most will miss out when one cannot get onto the podium. That is winning the race mentally. This is the first race in the championship that Alvis did not get onto the podium. From pole position, finishing first for qualification and pre-final to 4th on the final.

Winning by not getting on to the podium? Yes, the ability to see and feel, where and why, you and your racing machine could not cross the finishing line fast enough to get onto the podium, that is winning mentally. Imaging Alvis telling you that he can see that he is losing on the straight but winning on turns and corners. He feels that the tires are gripping well round the corners but his engine not producing enough power on the straight. With that, he knew that the only chance was to take it on the corners. Still, he was unable to hold on to his leading position and fell to 4th on the final.
He was happy to finish the race but was a little sad initially for not able to get on the podium.

After some quiet moments, he realized that winning mentally is as important. Kicking your kart, throwing your helmet and gloves, blaming your kart and other will not help you to win anything and Alvis knew that since his debut in kart racing.

A Little Present for Mother's Day

Alvis made a promise to his Mummy that he is going to give her a present after the weekend (30th May).

Teyjat, a quiet town in Nontron that was awaken by the sound of the speeding adrenalin. It was a wet Sunday morning where the 4th Race of Trophy Kart Sud-Ouest was held.

It wasn't a smooth day for Alvis. First, he had to struggle with the slippery track and second, his mechanic Daddy (me) had a difficult time setting up his kart for a wet track. Thanks to both Chay and Simon's 'mechanics' for the advice given. Alvis secured 5th position during chrono laps. He started well and was 4th position before the first turn. Just on the second lap, he was 'touched" on the rear and skidded out. He was unable to bring his kart back to the track and that prematurely ended his qualification race.

Alvis started prefinal from last position on the grid and fought his way through to finish eighth. During the final, there were some 'touching' between the fore runners and Alvis luckily finished 3rd with a close fight with the fore runners.

Alvis love the track so much that he wanted to go back again for more even he did not win the race. His passion for racing includes conquering every new track even on a non racing day.

A little promise to his Mummy for a Mother's day present nearly gone empty handed. With his determination and luck, Alvis kept his promise and presented a small trophy to Mummy as a present.

Racing Towards The North - St Benoit Sur Loire ( Karting 45 ) 020510

First of all, we would like to thank Team Of Course for transporting Alvis's kart and providing a shelter for us during the competition. Also, not forgetting Ask Kartland and Karting 45 for organising the Race. To provide Alvis an opportunity to excel in his kart racing, we went up north to St Benoit (about an hour drive southwest from Paris) to expose him to a new group of minikart racers and a new track. The weather was good on Saturday and he was having fun practicing with his buddy, Rui. He met some 'old friends' from last year National Race and was happy to be able to race with them again.

It was a cold and cloudy Sunday morning with threat of rain. Alvis was all prepared and his battle machine was ready for the track. There wasn't a free practice to test out the kart setting and went straight to chrono laps. Nevertheless, Alvis was able to 'communicate' with his kart, tyres and the track to secure pole position.

Something special for Alvis during the lunch time. He was invited to do a demostration for Babykart (4 to 7 year old category). This demo was for the parents of the younger kids to assess the speed and handling of the babykart. Brilliant demostration by Alvis.

In the pre-final, Alvis was overtaken during start off. Staying close behind the leader, watching his trajectory and moves and looking for an opportunity to overtake. After a few failed attempts, he finally managed to overtake the leader and stay leading throughout.

During the final, he was confused with the last minute adviced trajectory changed. He dropped 3 places to 4th position in the first few laps due to the confusion.

Being put to test, he held an urgent 'conference' with his kart, tyres, track, brakes, throttle and trajectory. Getting all to focus on the goal and as a team, Alvis succeeded in leading 'them' to take back his lead and together, they conquered the checkered flag.

Trophee Kart Sud-Ouest (Saint Genis 25-04-10)

It was a difficult but sweet weekend for Alvis. He was a bit feverish and his nose was bleeding before the Sunday morning free practice. We made a call for him to skip the free practice and wanted to stop him from the race. It was also a difficult moment for us because he insisted that he was okay and ready for the chrono laps. We finally agreed after consulting the medic and on one condition that he will stop racing if his nose bleed again.

During the chronos, Alvis managed to clock the fastest timing only on the last lap. After that, is lots of water to keep him hydrate and temperature taking too. His strong determination enable him to maintain his lead for qualification before we break for lunch.

This time round, Choo Rui (Alvis's karting kaki) was in the race too. He has improved a lot since his debut in kart racing. Being one of the youngest amongst the 13 minikart racers, Choo Rui came in 6th position with a strong performance.

With his perseverance, Alvis managed to stay in the leading position for the pre-final. During the final, there were some exciting moments of attempts to overtake Alvis by the runner up. Alvis defended his position brilliantly and conquered the checkered flag again with both fists in the air. Bravo Alvis !!!

With Alvis determination and perseverance to complete and win the race, his passion for racing has grown to a higher level.

Trophee Kart Sud-Ouest (Biganos 28-03-10)

A week after FFSA Championnat Regional Aquitaine Merignac, Alvis entered his 2nd race for Trophee Kart Sud-Ouest 2010 Championship at Circuit de Biganos. It was a cloudy and windy Sunday morning and with threat of rain. At his home ground, Alvis managed to clock the fastest lap time during chronos and rewrite his personal best.

Alvis was leading the race until something happened after the pre-final. He was called up by the race director and was informed that he will be penalised for early start before the green light and dropped two places to 3rd for the final. Just before the final, we were told to empty the fuel tank and use the official supply petrol for the top 3. It is something new this season, strange. Alvis took it gracefully and made a good start on the final. He took down both his opponents on the 2nd lap and lead all the way to the finishing line with both fists up in the air. Bravo Alvis !!!

It was a personal best lap time rewrite race. Alvis rewrote multiple times of his personal best as well as the track best lap time (best to my knowledge) for his category within the race day.

FFSA Championnat Régional Aquitaine Merignac

On 21st March 2010, Alvis started his first FFSA kart racing at Merignac Kart System under Kart Center Biscarrosse Ecoles Françaises de Karting . It was almost the same scenario as his first Ufolep race at Magescq last year. It was a wet Sunday morning and he has only about 6 laps of free practice on a new track. Again, with his ability of quick adaptation to the new track, he was able to clock the 2nd fastest lap time. His mechanic was happy with his timing and gave him a high five.

Alvis had a few great efforts to attempt to overtake the leader in the qualification round but was unsuccessful. He came in 2nd and that sum up the first half for minikart category.

After lunch, the weather turned sunny and the track started to dry up a little. During the pre-final, Alvis made his move right from the starting grid and managed to out brake the leader at the first corner to take the lead. He maintained his lead for the rest of the laps. During the weighing, it was noted that Alvis did not meet the required minimum weight. He was a bit disappointed with the weight issue, given that he put in his effort in attempting to overtake the leader and finished first in the pre-final.

Back in the paddock, the mechanic had to add more weight to Alvis's kart to ensure that the minimum requirement is met. With his disappointment, there were a lot of encouragement given to Alvis for the final round. This was the first time that I told him to win a race to proof that his winning during the pre-final was not because of lighter in weight but his ability to win. He has proven himself and did Kart Center Biscarrosse EFK proud by winning the final race with a fist punched in the air.

Trophee Kart Sud-Ouest 2010

Alvis started his first race of season 2010 at Magescq on 7th March. The weather was sunny but very cold (about 2 deg C) due to the incoming cold front. His effort put in during the winter practice paid off. He was able to withstand the cold though at the end of the practice round and chronos, his hands were quite cold and a bit painful.

As the event went on, the temperature gets warmer (about 10 deg C). Alvis managed to clock the fastest timing and secure pole position. It was kind of weird that only his kart was checked a few times and it seemed like the official was counting the teeth of the sprocket. Anyway, it was a good start for him for his Sud-Ouest and Subaru Cup Championship 2010.

Alvis managed to maintain his leading till the final round and was awarded with his first trophy of 2010. Came with a surprise, there was a lucky draw and Alvis won a Renault F1 cap and a Renault F1 team haversack. We would like to thank ASK Magescq's staff of Fun Motor Sports and the official for organising this race.

F1 Test Days in Barcelona (25 - 28 Feb 2010)

Ever since Alvis debut in kart racing, I always wanted to bring him to experience F1 live. It was definitely an eye opener for him as this was the first time that he came so close to F1. Though we were unable to book the guided tour (fully booked) where you are allowed to visit the race control, briefing room, podium and probably get to see the F1 drivers in close range, etc...We were some how lucky enough to get up close and personal with Felipe Massa, the Ferrari F1 driver. Alvis was so lucky that he managed to get not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 signatures and a photo taking with Felipe Massa. We would like to thank him and we wish him all the best in 2010 Championship and his career in F1.

We would also like to thank Monica Hernandez who really go all way out to help us in booking a hotel room (cos Alvis dearest Mummy booked the wrong dates with this hotel) and somehow because of her, we get to meet up with Felipe Massa in this hotel. Thank you so much.

We only get to see Fernando Alonso in action in Ferrari on the first two days that we visited Circuit De Catalunya, Barcelona. We would really like to stay for another two days to see Felipe Massa in his F1 car but Alvis needs to return to France on Saturday as he has a six days ski trip starting from Sunday.

1st 25 Minutes Endurance Minikart - Kartmag issue no. 136 (part 2)

The Endurance Race was the final episode of race season 2009 for Alvis. It was a very exciting, fun and enjoyable season for him. From his first experience on the rented kart to having his own racing machine. Going to different tracks within the Aquitaine (South West of France) with his Subaru to participate in competitions. Alvis finally ended the episode standing on the highest platform on the podium. He really enjoyed and raced his way up to having his first gold trophy. Well done Alvis.

Final Race of South-West Trophy - Kartmag issue no. 136 (part 1)

This final race was the conclusion to South-West Trophy and Subaru Minikart Championship. There were some heart stopping episodes where Alvis was trying very hard to overtake the leader in the final race and skidded at a corner. He lost two places to 4th position. Luckily, he was able to get back onto the track and started chasing the front runners. Quick to get back on pace, soon he managed to overtake to stay in podium. Again, while trying to overtake the 2nd kart, Alvis squeezed in a corner taking the inner line and went parallel with the kart on a straight track. Both persisted till the next right bend corner where Alvis out brake his opponent and took back his 2nd place. He was really having a great time and enjoying the racing while his mechanic and grid girl were so "kan chiong" (anxious) for him.

The above translated write up was - The favorite in this race Jeronne Clement had to be done to counter the onslaught of Alvis Ang, author of the fastest lap, but the trade of Clement was determined and assured him at the same time the victory of its Class Trophy. First Street Kart Racing in Blaye - Kartmag issue no.135

Alvis first street kart racing in Blaye town. He was really quite popular cos someone actually came up to him and asked if he was the boy that raced in the previous National Race. It was quite an experience for him as there were no apex to guide him going in and out of corners. He did well and take pole position but a wrong info robbed away his chance of a podium finish. Being able to race on the street was really fun, enjoyable and rewarding.

2nd Appearance on Kartmag - part 2

In this Kartmag issue no.133, there are two write ups. One being the earlier post mentioned on Magescq, the other was on 2nd National UFOLEP on 11 and 12 of July 2009. There were a total of 130 participants from all categories. As this is a National race, we travelled up north to Saint Genis De Saintonge a week before the actual date for track familiarisation and practice. See if you can spot me in the photo.

This time round, Alvis got to race with some kids from Paris and other regions. It gave him some exposure as to not just racing with the kids from his regions but others too. This race can let him have some comparisons as to how far he can go for competition within France. Still considered new to karting, he have to absorb as much knowledge of the track trajectory as possible on every session. On the 11 July, was the chrono and race 1. He managed to clock the fastest timing and take pole on race 1 to finished 1st.

It was cloudy on the next day. As the race entered the pre-final, some kids got anxious and went full speed during formation lap and all got confused and in chaos. When the formation lap started again, He was caught by surprise cos the start flag was signal half way through the formation lap. He was overtaken but managed to finish 2nd on the pre-final. On the final race, He tried a few attempts to overtake the leader but he was too good for him and he gladly finished 2nd in the final round with the fastest timing. Again, it was an enjoyable and exciting race.

The translated write up was "The race was played between the two Subaru, Clement Jeronne and Alvis Ang. The latter took pole position before emerged as winner during qualifications. But he (Alvis) was surprised by his rival (Clement) on depart during the pre-final. In the final, Jeronne had to work to resist the pressure from Alvis and needed brilliantly. Quentin Duran completed the podium at the wheel of Honda."

4 weeks after Magescq, it was Alvis 2nd race on home ground, Biganos. All went well except the last lap on the final. About 200 meters to the finishing line, he skidded while trying to overtake someone who was one lap behind. It was a great experience for him and he learned not to risk his position unnecessary. Be it win or lose, there is always something for him to learn and what important is, he enjoy racing.

The above write up was that Alvis is the fastest on chrono race but only to finish 3rd in the final round.

It is almost a year since Alvis first karting in France on 28 Feb 2009. He realised the fun of go karting versus PC and PS3 racing games after his first karting session. Knowing that he crave for more power and speed after a few sessions on rental kart, I decided to buy a minikart for him. Finally, on 14 April 2009, he was able to put on his racing gears, looking like a little pro kart racer, he sat onto his brand new Subaru minikart. Instantly, he could feel the different in power and speed from his racing machine on the track.

With the encouragement from monsieur Regis, the man who taught him a few tricks and techniques, I registered him for competition. His first kart racing competition took place on 24 may 2009 at Magescq, south west of France. It was quite a challenge for him as he was still practising on Biganos track and here I put him onto a new track for his first race. With his ability to adapt to new track, he was happy to get onto the podium with the fastest lap time and received his first trophy.

Singapore National Karting Championship

Kart racing in Singapore is back in action. Karting dreams get a new boost, an article from the sunday times. The first of the five-race National Karting Championship will be held in March at Kartright Speedway.

Helmet makeover
